Taiping's origins trace back to the discovery of tin deposits in the 19th century, attracting Chinese settlers. The town was initially known as Klian Pauh and became a center of conflict between two groups, the Ghee Hin and Hai San societies. British intervention in the early 1870s ended the feuding, and Taiping was established as the administrative center of Perak in 1875. It remained significant until the state capital moved to Ipoh in 1937.
