Arnhem's history dates back to early settlements near the Sint-Jansbeek stream. The city developed as a strategic location where roads converged, gaining prominence in the 16th century. In 1543, Arnhem came under the control of Charles V. It played a significant role during the Eighty Years' War and was captured by Dutch and English forces in 1585, marking its importance in Dutch history.
