Nuenen's origins date back to between the 5th and 8th centuries, with archaeological finds indicating early Germanic settlements. The civil municipality was established around 1300 AD, and the combined municipality of Nuenen, Gerwen en Nederwetten was formed in 1821. Vincent van Gogh lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885, creating many notable works.
