Delft was established as a town in 1075, with its name derived from the Dutch word for digging. The city grew around its oldest canal, The Old Delft, which remains a focal point today. In 1246, Delft received city rights, leading to prosperity and expansion. A devastating fire in 1536 destroyed many homes, but the city rebuilt and continued to thrive, becoming a center for trade and culture.
