Route 7 from Sawmill, AZ is NOT recommended — Entering the park from the east at Sawmill, AZ on Route 7 is not recommended. Part of this route is UNPAVED and UNMAINTAINED. Please stay on paved roads, such as Indian Route 64 from Tsaile, AZ and Highway 191/Route 7 from Chinle, AZ.

Introduction
Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located in northeastern Arizona, within the Navajo Nation. It is a significant site for the Navajo people, showcasing their history and culture through ancient cliff dwellings and rock art. The canyon has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of the Anasazi civilization visible in its structures and petroglyphs.
Visitors come to explore the scenic overlooks and trails, such as the White House Ruins Trail, which leads to the only accessible Anasazi ruin without a guide. The canyon's history is marked by both beauty and tragedy, including the forced removal of the Navajo people in the 1860s, making it a place of reflection as well as exploration.
