History
The area now known as Solvang was first settled in 1804 with the establishment of Mission Santa Ines by Spanish missionaries. This mission served as a religious and cultural center for the local Chumash people and the surrounding community. In 1911, Danish Americans seeking a milder climate established Solvang, creating a town that reflected their heritage. The architecture and culture were designed to mimic that of Denmark, attracting visitors and preserving their traditions.
