Mammoth Cave National Park: the world's longest cave system, with over 400 miles of explored passageways. Guided tours are available year-round, but summer can be crowded. Consider visiting in the early morning for a quieter experience.
Kentucky Horse Park: a tribute to the state's equestrian heritage, featuring live horse shows and a museum. Spring is ideal for pleasant weather and various events, including the Kentucky Horse Park's annual Horse Mania.
Red River Gorge: known for its natural rock formations and over 100 miles of hiking trails. Fall is particularly beautiful here, with colorful foliage. Be prepared for cooler temperatures and potential rain in late October.
Louisville Slugger Museum: a great stop for baseball fans, showcasing the history of the iconic bat. Check for special exhibits that change throughout the year, including the annual Hall of Fame exhibit.
Churchill Downs: home of the Kentucky Derby, held on the first Saturday in May. If you visit outside of Derby season, you can still tour the grounds and learn about the history of horse racing.
Cumberland Falls: often called the 'Niagara of the South,' this waterfall is especially impressive during spring runoff. Look for the moonbow phenomenon on clear nights in the summer, particularly in June and July.
The Bourbon Trail: a journey through distilleries, with tastings and tours available. Reservations are recommended, especially in the fall when tourism peaks. Some distilleries may have limited hours in winter, so check ahead.
Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate: a glimpse into Kentucky's political history, with guided tours available. The gardens are lovely in spring and summer, particularly in May when the flowers are in full bloom.
