El Calderon Trail closed for construction through September 2026 — The El Calderon Trail and parking area are closed from August 2025 through September 2026 for a major improvement project. Visitor center bookstore closed August 26 for inventory — The Western National Parks (WNP) bookstore at the El Malpais Visitor Center will be closed for annual inventory on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Introduction
El Malpais National Monument, established in 1987, encompasses over 114,000 acres of volcanic terrain in New Mexico. This area has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years, with significant archaeological sites that reflect its rich history. Visitors come to explore the unique lava formations and to connect with the cultural heritage of the Acoma, Laguna, Zuni, and Ramah Navajo tribes, who still gather here for traditional practices.
The landscape features lava tubes, cinder cones, and natural arches, making it a fascinating destination for outdoor enthusiasts. While the park offers stunning geological formations, it is essential to prepare adequately for hiking and caving, as conditions can be challenging and unpredictable.
