History
Monterey was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 18th century. It became the capital of Alta California under Spanish rule and later served as a significant port during the Mexican era.
The city thrived in the early 20th century due to the sardine canning industry. However, overfishing led to its decline, prompting a shift towards tourism and conservation, particularly with the establishment of the aquarium in 1984.
