History
Mbombela was founded in 1895 as Nelspruit by the Nel brothers, who grazed cattle in the area. The city played a significant role during the Boer War, briefly serving as the seat of government for the South African Republic. Its location made it a key stop on the Eastern Railway, connecting the goldfields of Witwatersrand to Delagoa Bay.
The discovery of gold in the surrounding areas, such as Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton, spurred growth and development. Over the years, Nelspruit evolved into a commercial hub, eventually being renamed Mbombela in 2009, reflecting its local heritage and culture.
