Carcassonne's history stretches back over two millennia, with evidence of settlements predating the Romans. The Cité was fortified by the Romans and later became a strategic stronghold during the medieval period. Its walls and towers have witnessed countless battles and sieges.

In the 19th century, architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc undertook extensive restoration of the fortress, which has led to some debate about its authenticity. Today, Carcassonne is celebrated for its well-preserved medieval architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting visitors from around the globe.
