The area around Regensburg has been inhabited since 5000 BC, with the first significant settlement established by the Celts. In 179 AD, the Romans built the fortress Castra Regina, marking the beginning of the city's official history. This fortress served as a military base for two centuries.

After the Roman departure, Regensburg evolved into a civil settlement and became the seat of Bavarian dukes around 500 AD. The establishment of the bishopric in 739 further solidified its importance, leading to a rich history that is still visible in its architecture and layout today.
