Thun's history dates back to the Neolithic age, with evidence of early settlements. The name comes from the Celtic term Dunum, meaning fortified city. In 58 BC, it became part of the Roman Empire and served as an administrative center.

After the Romans, the Burgundians took control around 400 AD. Thun was first mentioned in the 7th century. Over the centuries, it developed into an important trade hub, with its strategic location near Lake Thun and the Aare River playing a significant role in its growth.
