History

Izmit's history dates back to around 700 BC when it was known as Astakos, a port city vital for trade between Anatolia and the Mediterranean. The city was rebuilt by Nicomedes I of Bithynia in 264 BC and renamed Nicomedia, becoming a significant center during the Roman Empire.
