History
Canmore was named in 1884 after Malcolm III of Scotland, with the name meaning 'Big Head' in Gaelic. The town's development accelerated when coal mining began in the late 1800s, with the No. 1 mine opening in 1887. By the 1890s, Canmore had established itself as a community, complete with a North-West Mounted Police barrack. The barrack was later restored and is now part of the Canmore Museum, which highlights the area's rich history.
