History

Elverum was the first town to face destruction at the start of World War II. In April 1940, key figures including the king fled to Hamar and Elverum during the German invasion. This allowed Norway to maintain a government in exile.

The town's parliament meeting in Elverum granted the cabinet full authority, a significant moment in Norwegian history. It would take over five years for the parliament to reconvene after the occupation ended.
