El Chaltén was founded in 1985 as a base for climbers and trekkers exploring the surrounding mountains. Its name, meaning 'smoking mountain' in the indigenous Tehuelche language, refers to the clouds that often envelop Cerro Fitz Roy.

Initially a small outpost, the village has grown significantly in recent years, driven by tourism and outdoor activities. Today, it serves as a gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, attracting visitors from around the globe.
